New Adventure Begins

Today begins something new for me...I'm allowing Ben and Nic to travel to Aguascalientes for 2 weeks to stay with a family.  Do I know this family?  Nope.  They are a friend of a friend.  But we have been in correspondence for a few months now via email.  They have a son who is 16 and will be returning to Houston with the boys the end of this month. They are SO excited!

Ben turns 18 tomorrow (while in Mexico)...not sure if this is good or not. hahaha  The host family are  planning a surprise party for him thanks to Nic.

I just pray they are safe.  You hear so many stories about Mexico but I know I need to let go!  They are going there to work on their Spanish.

Did I mention how excited they are?

Tickets are booked!

Looks like Ben and I will be making another trip to visit another college!  I don't mind...I've heard NC is beautiful this time of year and the campus at UNC/Chappel Hill is gorgeous!  We are flying out the night of April 19th and back late on the 21st.  We have to come back for the Academy of Science and Technology Senior Banquet on Sunday!  Hey at $50 a person I DON'T want to miss that one!  hahaha

I have reassured David that if Ben does decide to go to UNC that my salary will pay for college.  Gee...I'm just glad I have a job.  Thank you Dr. Stockton and the CISD School Board!  (memo to self:  write a thank you note for my raise this coming year).

I asked Ben what he wanted to eat for his graduation party.  His response "MOM, you're not planning a party are you?" (duh) "Because I don't want a party!  If you have a party if means we are serving alcohol."  Well, I responded with not at my party I'm not.  Then we preceded to disagree on having a "party" or a "get together".  It took us 2 days but we are having a "party" the night after graduation.  I think he found out another friends' mom was having a "party" too.  Guess my idea of have a party was that bad after all.

Am I getting old or what?

Seems like I haven't had any time since last week to post and I'm getting lots of texts asking what was the outcome.  Sorry to leave everyone hanging!

Duke and Yale notified Ben last Thursday that he was not selected.  We had to wait until Friday morning to finally get word from Harvard.  That too was a no.  We were all a little disappointed but not surprised.  But how many people actually even get a chance to submit an application to those kind of schools?  I'm so very proud of him and know where ever he ends up he will love it and have a great time in the next 4 years.

His choices are UNC, Rice, UT and Emory.

As of today his first choice is UNC at Chappel Hill and behind that Rice University right here in Houston.  Of course, I would LOVE to "have" to travel to North Carolina.  He wants to go and visit the campus before  he makes his final commitment.  So we are flying to NC on April 19th for 2 nights.  I've heard it is absolutely beautiful in the Spring!  Most likely I will not be able to go with him in August to move in so this will be perfect for me to go.  My principal approved me to go and I have a sub!  Can't wait.

Note to self:  remember to book a professional photographer in the fall to take Senior pictures of Nic.  hahaha  Ben is getting his pictures taken on April 17th but until then I took one of his today.

Emory is a YES!

Four out of five isn't bad at all!  Even if the next 3 are no I am so proud of Ben!  He is just as thrilled....just knowing he gets a choice!

We will all be standing by the phone waiting for the infamous text tomorrow.  What ever happened to snail mail?

Final 4

Well, the week has come - notifications from all colleges are due by the end of the month.  Needless to say the anxiety levels are high at our house!  Right now as a mom I'm really excited just thinking Ben will know soon where he is going.  I'm sure the tears are going to flow later on. hahaha

Last Saturday Ben heard from Rice University and that really gave him the boost he was needing.  When he initially got a no from Stanford he was bummed, upset, and mad.  Just think you have spent the last four years in a high school that is NOT your typical HS.  When he started 9th grade it was equivalent to starting college.  The level of classes he has taken can not be compared to a regular HS.  There were teachers who couldn't teach to these kids.  We are talking about a different breed of students - they are all self-motivated, high scoring, gifted and talented.

Then on Monday came the YES from University of North Carolina at Chapell Hill!  Ben was ecstatic!  So was the rest of the family too!  I can handle visiting NC - just think 4 seasons, ocean and SNOW!  Oh...that means Ben will need a whole new wardrobe.  Nope...won't let that deter us from UNC!

Anxiety levels still high.

Here is what is ahead for the week as per all the schools websites:
Wednesday by 6:00 pm - Emory
Thursday by 6:00 pm - Duke, Yale and Harvard

Yes...it is truly the FINAL 4!

Emory University

If your 17 year old son asks "Mom,  want to ride along with me to my Emory interview on Saturday?  Maybe we could have lunch together afterwards."  "YES!!!"  I immediately cancelled my hair appointment and my workshop that I had been signed up for for the past 2 months.  I am realizing that our time with Ben at home is coming to an end soon.  I will be ok.  I have to keep saying that one.

Today we drove down to the Galleria area and he had an interview with Emory University.  Not quite sure why  he applied there since we haven't visited the campus.  They were interviewing about 40 applicants today.  He came out with a huge smile and said "that was easy....she was impressed with all that I have accomplished."  He was with the lady for about 45 minutes.  Afterwards we did have lunch together.  We laughed and I told him stories about when I was in college.  He has grown up so much.

If you ask him "where do you REALLY want to go?"  His reply is still the same...I don't know.  All I do know is that he is anxiously waiting to hear something!  He knows for sure he can attend UT so that helps but I really hope he can go out of state somewhere.  To get out there meet new friends, see more of the world and all that it has to offer!

Today I only cried a little.  He just gives me a hug and then you know I'm all better.

January 11, 2012

I can't believe it has been almost a year since I have posted anything to this blog!  Where has the time gone?  Some have asked if I'm doing the MS150 again this year - no.  I decided not to since Ben is a Senior and I didn't want every weekend to be tied up riding...I might miss something.  hahaha
So...what is going on now?  Besides the stress of getting your 17 year old to finish ALL his applications?  He took it down to the wire  - 12/31 was the deadline and he managed to get his last one submitted before the strike of midnight!  Now we sit and wait to see where he will be going this fall.  Our whole family is in anticipation!
